I can't say I'm an expert and obviously, I haven't played as long as I wanted to be an expert in paintball, but so far, throughout the played games and seen, I would like to talk about the difference between woodsball (a.k.a. scenario) and speedball in the paintball world.

From the very start, I believe the grater difference between them is the gear (uniform), in Speedball you use a complete uniform (jersey & pants) with a great design on them, usually bright and dark colors together in a swirl of awesomeness, while on Woodsball is more about camouflage, yes, also jersey and pants but is more intended to blend more with the scenario, since is a more "strategic" game, speedball is also strategic, but it relies on speed more than tactical movement.Although, since the speed is a key feature in both, but more in speedball (c´mon it's right on the name) and hence the less "gear" the faster you'd be able to move, nevertheless, pods and portapods are a must. In woodsball... I won't say the more pouches you have the better, but you can either move fast (assault) or move slow (tank). You usually would use the Co2 or HPA tank on your bank with a remote line, in speedball the HPA tank is the most common choice and is usually attached to the marker.
MARKERS
The markers for woodsball are more like replicas of real fire weapons, i.e. M16 assault rifle, AK-47, Desert Eagle for the TiPX or TPX. On the other hand, speedball markers are more into fabrication, carbon fiber, aluminum, etc, the lighter the better and also accuracy is a very important thing, but, then again, a marker marks (yeah i know) so you can play with either one wherever you want. You really just have to choose what to play, find the style that suits you better, and go with it.
GEAR
THE MOST IMPORTANT GEAR in paintball (no matter the style) is the MASK. You must always, protect your eyes and head; a vest is optional, although is more common in woodsball, but usually the jerseys are somewhat loose to absorb the impact of the paintball. There is a wide variety of masks, so then again, choose one you feel comfortable with, that you can breath and that covers at least 99% of your face (ears to chin). I guess we'll leave that for another post.
HPA or Co2 tanks, remote lines, gravity hoppers, rotors, barrels, pods, paintballs, cleats or soccer shoes (some players use them), boots, gloves, shemaghs, helmets, tactical goggles (not advised by some, use under your own risk), all becomes part of what paintball is; not all of the mentioned is required to play but, what you do really need to be able to play is a mask, a tank and a marker, lets not forget the paintballs, they're very important too. If you have gone to a field and rent the equipment you're going to receive them as well as a vest or a jersey depending on the style.
To sum it up, doesn't matter what you play, just find yourself in the field and go with it. Paintball is a beautiful and exciting game, and it must be respected. Follow the rules in the field, and play. If you haven't played before and you want to start, visit any local paintball field and try it.
